Care of your paintings | Laura Longhurst

Displaying Your Painting

Every original painting is created to be lived with and enjoyed. Choosing the right location will help preserve its beauty while allowing it to become part of your home.

Where possible, display your painting away from prolonged direct sunlight, as ultraviolet light can gradually affect pigments and/or protective varnishes over time. It's also best to avoid hanging artwork directly above radiators, fireplaces or in areas of high humidity, where fluctuations in temperature and moisture may affect the canvas.

With a little care and thoughtful placement, your painting will continue to reveal the colour, texture and atmosphere that first inspired its creation

Cleaning Your Painting

Your painting requires very little maintenance. Occasional light dusting is all that's needed to keep it looking its best.

Using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush or a clean microfibre cloth, gently remove any surface dust with minimal pressure. The richly textured surface is an important part of the artwork, so avoid rubbing or pressing directly onto the paint.

Never use water, furniture polish, household cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the painted surface or protective finish.

With this simple care, your painting will continue to be enjoyed for many years.

Varnished & Unvarnished Paintings

Each painting is carefully considered from start to finish, including the final surface finish. Some of my paintings are completed with a varnish. This protective layer helps shield the surface from dust and ultraviolet light while enriching the depth and vibrancy of the colours.

Others are intentionally left unvarnished. This is an artistic decision rather than an unfinished one. An unvarnished surface preserves the natural character of the oil paint, allowing subtle variations in texture and sheen to remain visible, giving the painting a beautifully tactile quality. I sometimes choose to varnish one area of the painting for effect too.

Whether varnished or unvarnished, every painting is created using professional-quality materials and is intended to be enjoyed for many years with simple, thoughtful care.

How will I know if my painting is varnished?

The painting description states whether or not it is varnished, but if you are unsure please feel free to contact me.

Moving & Storing Your Artwork

If you ever need to move or store your painting, a little extra care will help keep it in perfect condition.

Where possible, transport paintings upright rather than laid flat, and avoid placing heavy objects against the canvas. If storing your artwork, wrap it in acid-free tissue paper or a clean cotton sheet before adding protective packaging, and keep it in a dry, temperature-stable environment away from excessive heat, cold or damp.

Should your painting ever need to travel, I recommend using protective corner guards and a sturdy box to help prevent accidental damage during transit.
