Created for the Beauty Out of the Ashes exhibition, Mayfair, London.
Inspired by the extraordinary landscape and history of Deception Island in Antarctica, Embers Beneath the Ice explores the meeting point between destruction, memory and renewal.
Once a centre of the Antarctic whaling industry, Deception Island's sheltered volcanic harbour became a place of intense human activity. Processing stations, machinery and the remnants of an industry built around immense loss once occupied its shores. Later volcanic eruptions buried and destroyed much of what had been left behind, allowing the landscape to slowly reclaim itself.
This painting with its sweeping layers of ice, sea and cloud are contrasted with deep charcoal tones and flashes of gold. The gold becomes a symbol of what remains beneath the surface — traces of heat, memory and human history emerging through an otherwise stark and frozen landscape and its beauty.
The work reflects on the idea that beauty can exist alongside devastation, and that landscapes marked by destruction can ultimately become places of extraordinary renewal. The dark forms beneath the water and ice suggest the remnants of a buried past, while the movement of light across the surface speaks of nature's ability to transform and reclaim.
