There are moments along the way that feel particularly special, and being invited to take part in Beauty Out of Ashes at the Shadow Gallery in Mayfair, London, this September is certainly one of them.
I will be exhibiting “Embers Beneath the Ice’’ a textured oil painting inspired by a place I have long been fascinated by. I’m deliberately keeping the painting itself under wraps for now, but its title perhaps offers a small clue. ‘“Embers Beneath the Ice” came from my fascination with a place where two seemingly opposing forces exist side by side — a landscape shaped by both ice and fire, with a past that is far darker than its stark beauty might first suggest. A reminder that things that endure, histories that linger, and unexpected beauty emerging from darker places.
The title Beauty Out of Ashes also feels particularly fitting to me. I don’t think it needs to be taken literally; instead, it suggests transformation — the idea that something beautiful can emerge from difficult, challenging or unexpected places. What I find especially interesting about a group exhibition like this is that each artist will interpret those words in their own way, through their own experiences, ideas and creative language. In that sense, there will be many different stories within the same title, and I’m intrigued to see how each artist brings their own meaning to it. For me, it feels very much at home alongside Embers Beneath the Ice.
I’m particularly delighted to be exhibiting alongside award-winning artist Fiona J Rose, Alexandra Spryatos, and other resident artists from the Atelier Gallery in West Sussex. To take a piece of my work from the Sussex coast to the heart of Mayfair feels like another lovely step “along the way”
More about the exhibition, and perhaps a little more about Embers Beneath the Ice, will follow after the doors open. For now, I’m happy to let the title do a little of the talking.
